Owner Branch Rickey announces the signing of Jackie Robinson by the Dodgers. Robinson, the majors’ first African-American player, played 9 seasons, all for Brooklyn. He won Rookie of the Year in 1947 and the league’s MVP 2 years later.

Blue Jays’ Joe Carter hits a dramatic walk-off home run in Game 6 of the World Series against Philadelphia’s Mitch Williams. It was the second time a World Series was won on a walk-off home run.
